Have you ever messed up?
Made a total fool out of yourself, or done something completely wrong that could have been prevented with a bit of practice?
Imagine having the ability to go back in time. Having the power to rehearse anything before you did it for real. Before it counted.
I recently wrote a guest post on my friend Justin’s site, Mazzastick, and I talked about how it’s possible using lucid dreams. I want to give you a run down of how it can help improve your life.
We all feel weak at some point
Even if you’re the most confident person in the world, there will still be times where you feel vulnerable:
- Feeling anxious
- A little shy
- Suffering from low confidence
Everyone deals with things differently. Some things we excel at; some things not so much.
Do you know what the amygdala is?
A small part of your brain happens to be called — the amygdala. It controls the body’s flight or flight response. It acts on information it’s received in the past. It’s sort of like a defense mechanism to protect you from danger .
In any situation where you’ve been anxious, shy, or lacking in confidence, the amygdala will associate it with distress. It’s why when you think of certain situations it can fill you with dread. It will always feel this way until you fix it.
It can be fixed quite easily
To reprogram your brain you need to expose yourself to an uncomfortable situation. Once you expose yourself the amygdala will realize nothing can harm you and it will no longer affect your thinking in a negative way.
It sounds easy because you’d assume anyone can throw themselves out there and be exposed to whatever they fear. The hard part is actually doing it.
Tell someone who feels anxious to walk onto a stage and give a speech in front of hundreds of people and you’ll see it’s not as easy as it sounds. Tell someone who feels shy around women to ask out the girl of their dreams and they will laugh at you.
Lots of people would rather go on being unhappy than expose their weakness to anyone. Have you ever been in a situation where you could have risked it all for something amazing, but fear held you back?
Lucid dreaming is the answer
You already know the brain can’t tell the difference between dreams and reality. It would be easy to become lucid if it did. You’d be lucid every night, but that isn’t the case.
The great news is, you can reprogram your amygdala inside a lucid dream. You can expose yourself to fearful situations knowing there won’t be any social repercussions and no-one will see your weakness.
This could be huge
It means you can rehearse any situation in a lucid dream before you ever tackle it in real life. And when you do, your amygdala show no fear. It won’t be afraid in the slightest. You’ll be confident enough to do anything…
All because of practicing real world simulations in a lucid dream.
Everyone’s heard of the pick-up artist trick: guy walks around asking out hundreds of girls and eventually loses all fear. Now he can confidently ask out anyone. Same idea in lucid dreams except you don’t look like a man whore.
Now you can do anything
Now you will never fear going into your boss’ office and asking for that promotion. You have already practiced it dozens of times. You’ve also jumped out of an airplane before, so why would you ever fear it in real life? Time to go sky diving. 🙂
How many situations can you think of that would benefit you?
- Holding a snake in your hands
- Confronting the office bully
- Taking the deciding penalty is an important game
- Dancing in the middle of a packed club
- Delivering a speech in your class
(edit: on the advice of Sasha) To give you an example of something I’ve used it for: I used to have a job which required my to climb high ladders and walk about roofs. Having some vertigo, this wasn’t always easy. That’s an understatement. I started climbing about roofs and exposing myself to heights in general. Soon I lost 95% of the fear I once had and my job was a lot easier.
I still get a little vertigo when I’m flying. When I’m accelerating away from the ground or if I look down below and everything looks so small. I don’t want that to change. I love it. It makes it all the more exciting.
The possibilities are unlimited. Your imagination is the only thing that can hold you back. Anything you don’t come up with will be sent straight to your inbox in some of my emails, if you sign up to the list. You can make the most of this special ability. Your lucid ability. And do anything.
